Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, DC Medina’s (real name Danny Contreras) musical career began in 2004 when he joined his middle school’s band as a brass player, specifically the trumpet. He studied the trumpet for his two middle school years; passionately performing and diligently learning the art of the trumpet. But following middle school, a changed of hear moved DC Medina to the drums, a switch which kick-started his evolution into an EDM producer. “I love percussion instruments. It runs in my blood; my dad plays the piano and he’s very successful in his genre. Acclaimed internationally, and I guess it was only a matter of time before I transitioned into a different instrument.” The drums taught him how to give his music a heartbeat. He studied the instrument from library books, especially back-catalogues of magazine ‘Modern Drummer’. But, while the magazine glorified the drummers of bands such as Rush, King Crimson and Led Zeppelin, nothing interested Danny more than extreme drumming from progressive death metal bands. “I loved Cannibal Corpse, Opeth. They were amazing, the drummers managed to keep that crazy rhythm for five minutes at a time. I loved them, and their crazy techniques. But, in all reality, I knew I had to go deeper than Cannibal Corpse.” Eventually, he would trace back modern drumming to classic jazz from the 20s; a genre which he instantly loved.
