Cedric Has a Name is Chris Steenson, a Belfast-based singer/songwriter, heir to the unmistakable melancholia of Sean Lennon, Pedro the Lion and Elliott Smith. Having been writing and performing for the last year, his craft is an incarnation of the spirit that these musicians made their own: quiet, endearing music with a penetrative lyrical approach, as well as uncanny knack for reducing sound to the basis of instinctive harmony. He is then, something of a fading - if not dying - breed of singer/songwriter: lyrically, an all-too uncommon juggler of inspiration and inverted romanticism; compositionally, a musician betraying no sense of contrivance in offering up a thorough approach which, above all else, speaks volumes in a world all too familiar with regurgitated sentiment and sickeningly similar chord progressions. Although relatively new to the thriving Belfast music scene, he has yet to pass up an opportunity for making his music heard, playing alongside the likes of Junior Johnson and Ian McHugh of A Plastic Rose. Cue, then, the debut EP, What We Want + 3 Songs (released 14 June, 2011) β a distillation of Steenson's marked development, which will surely build upon the attention he has attracted recently.
