Composer, performer, sound artist, writer Born 1977 in Melbourne, Australia. Presently based in Tokyo, Japan. Composing since 1994. Composing with computers since 1997. Graduated with honours in music from LaTrobe University, Melbourne, Australia, where research addressed the aesthetic influence and result of using particular software to create music. While completing an honours thesis and composition portfolio, Stickland was the principal organizer of a concert to celebrate music affiliated with LaTrobe University, and featured a variety of performances from premier Australian musicians, including Michael Harvey, David Chesworth, Ros Bandt and Graeme Leak (co-organiser). Having studied with the likes of Warren Burt (Australian freelance composer, instrument maker and microtonal expert) and Rainer Linz (Jon Rose and Stelarc collaborator), Stickland currently consults with Terre Thaemlitz on a regular basis, regarding electronic music composition, graphic and web design, and writing on music. Stickland's present work explores the roles of gender and redundancy in music and the subversion of accepted gestures to raise awareness of their aesthetic manipulation.
