Black Landlord is an exceptional new and unique sound in Hip-Hop today. It combines all the elements of an old Motown review with classic old-school Hip-Hop. Straight outta Philly, Black Landlord is set on collectin’ the rent. The motto -- “Rent is due on the 1st not the 5th, bitches.” The founder, Maxx, was a member and lead rapper of The Goats (Ruff House Records; Cypress Hill, The Fugees, Kriss Kross) where he became musically politically motivated and helped write their groundbreaking LP, Tricks of the Shade. After The Goats broke up in 1997 Maxx formed Incognegro with Dj Smoove and Mark Boyce, both of the Goats. After releasing one self-titled album, the group went on the road where Maxx met French electro producers Olaf Hund and Léonard de Léonard, and begun Maxx’s solo career. Maxx then moved to Berlin, Germany (far from his hometown roots in North Philly), and began working on his solo album with Olaf and Leonard de Leonard. After the album was completed he left Berlin and moved back to Philly, album in hand. He then took these electro hip-hop tracks and began working with a few friends. They took these tracks and began to re-work them into what is now Black Landlord. These friends are made up of local musicians whom Maxx had worked with or partied with in some way, shape or form.
