The Behna Ensemble was born in 2006 to a family of like-minded friends. Its father is none other than Ramin Behna, who is a prolific contemporary Iranian composer. A graduate of Music from Azad University, he formed the four-member Avizheh Ensemble in 1997. Avizheh produced two landmark fusion albums, Nokhostin ("Premier") and Avizheh, which attracted the attention of listeners and critics alike with "almost fresh new approaches to Iranian Music." Avizheh members parted ways after these albums. They proceeded with their own versions of the Avizeh vision, performing live and producing records. Behna, too, pursued the ideas that Avizheh begat and this is best reflected in the Behna Ensemble. A small and chummy group of musicians first began by reworking the composition of Behna for Avizheh. Two concerts -- at Honar Cultural Center (2006) and Niavaran Palace's Green Hall (2008) -- followed. New compositions in those concerts were recorded in studio and the current album, Not Like That!, was conceived. Kasra Ebrahimi on drums, Behrang Baqaii playing the string instrument tar, Mahan Mirarab plucking away at his guitar and Pourang Pourshirazi on contrabass were the initial band members. Later, former Avizheh bassist Babak Riahipour, keyboardist Alireza Rahiminezhad and percussionist Sina Khoshkbijari joined the ensemble.
