Becca Pieters, formerly known as White Elephant Gift Exchange, got her start playing the oboe in middle school band class. She had a natural affinity for the strange, nasal woodwind instrument and continued playing through college. She received a scholarship to study oboe performance at the University of Florida, but sometime along the way she discovered the guitar. After learning approximately five chords, she then let the poor instrument sit in a corner while, in an effort to create her own music, she attempted to study music composition at UF. She soon realized that what she wanted to create musically fit better in the world of songwriting than in the world of academic music composition. Towards the end of her university career she started writing silly songs with the few chords she knew and had a short-lived joke band. At some point, she decided she wanted to focus more on songwriting and started to write more personal songs. Thus, White Elephant Gift Exchange was born. Becca now focuses more on guitar, vocals, and songwriting, but still includes the occasional oboe solo in her recordings. In September of 2012, she switched from the White Elephant Gift Exchange moniker to her own name. https://www.facebook.com/BeccaPietersMusic User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
