Axel Kober (* 10. Februar 1970 in Kronach) is a German conductor. Axel Kober completed his studies at the Music College in Würzburg, studying with Peter Falk and Günther Wick. In 1994 he embarked upon his first engagement at the State Theatre in Schwerin. From 1994 to 2003 he was appointed first staff conductor and deputy to the General music director at the Dortmund theatre. In 2003 Axel Kober became deputy of the General music director at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and in 2006 took over as Music director. During this time he conducted the major works of Richard Wagner, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, Lohengrin and the “Ring”. In 2007 he was appointed Music director of the Leipzig Opera, together with Riccardo Chailly he was responsible for the musical life in the city. In 2007 he made his debut at the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig which led to a steady relationship. In 2009 he was appointed General music director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf /Duisburg. As a guest Kober has conducted at the Royal Opera Copenhagen, Nuremberg State theatre, Volksoper Vienna, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Halle Orchestra and the NDR Orchestra. 2013 will be his debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele conducting "Tannhäuser".
