about

Anselmo Fazio (Castrogiovanni , second half of the 16th century - first half of the 17th century) was a Christian monk and Italian composer known mainly for his opera “Sacrarum cantionum quinis vocibus decantandaru”. Anselmo Fazio or Anselmo di Fazio or Anselmo di Facio or Anselmus Fatius was an Italian composer born in Castrogiovanni, today Enna , in the second half of the sixteenth century , who died in the early seventeenth century . He was an Augustinian monk, he was active in Sicily from 1589 to 1628 . He lived during the Aragonese domination at a time when the state-owned city of Castrogiovanni hosted a fervent cultural environment of late humanism. He was organist, musician and poet. Several literary texts have come down to us taken from the “First book of five-part madrigals” published in Messina by Fausto Bufalino in 1589 . In these we highlight the delicate style of Fazio's poetry who, with wit and skill, deals with the amorous theme so in vogue at that time. If it may seem unusual for a monk to be interested in secular music, it should be considered that at that time the Mother Church of Enna was the site of a famous musical chapel where the studies and activities of various local musicians were concentrated. Among these must be mentioned Matteo de Collitortis, belonging to the family that owned the Collotorto fief in the Enna area, who worked at the beginning of the sixteenth century. He was a copyist and partly author of the oldest Sicilian musical treatise. T
