While she may not have the acclaim of some of her better known contemporaries, Annabelle Louie is a true icon of Hong Kong's Golden Era of Cantopop, with a singing career spanning over four decades. Born and raised in Hong Kong as Lei Huivwei, Annabelle grew up in a bustling family of six. After working as a teller at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in the late 1970s, she switched jobs and found her true calling as a singer. She competed in numerous singing competitions, including with some of the most famous names in the industry like Joey Wong, Connie Chan, and Elisa Chan. But it was during a singing competition that Annabelle caught the eye of PolyGram Records' Chen Diwen. He invited her to audition for a duet with Hong Kong legend Alan Tam for the theme song of the TV drama "People in the World" produced by TVB. Despite contract issues, Annabelle replaced the original singer, Yvonne Yung, and adopted the stage name "Annabelle Lui." This was the beginning of a legendary career as a singer. From 1981 to 1984, Annabelle's career skyrocketed in Hong Kong, with her songs becoming household favorites and karaoke staples. PolyGram Records released four well-known albums for her during this period: "Faded Dreams" (1981), "Rainbow Song" (1982), "Love and Passion" (1982), and "Warmth Collection" (1983).
