American Stoner is a highly influential alternative/post-rock band from Doylestown, Pennsylvania that formed in 2006 by James Sowden and Ken Snyder. The original lineup consisted of both Sowden and Snyder on guitar, Chris Frantz on Drums, and Ryan Ritchey on bass guitar. After several lineup changes, the current band members presently consist of Sowden and Snyder. The band draws much of their influence from mega-giant alternative bands including Coldplay, The Smiths, and Spoon. The influence of these bands can clearly be seen in American Stoner's first EP, "The melting pot", released in October 2006. "The object of the band's first extended play album was to infuse the most characteristic aspects of these bands while at the same time incorporating our own distinct style-hence the name 'the melting pot'" says Sowden in the November 2006 edition of Spin magazine. Following the conclusion of the band's second world tour headlining with Coldplay in January 2008, Ritchey and Frantz decided to leave the band due to personal conflicts. However, in August 2008, the band released their EP titled, "The Alchemist EP". The sound and style of the band consisting of Sowden and Snyder on acoustic guitars is reminiscent of early folk and Americana style bands. The new and invigorating sound of American Stoner could only mean that the band will once again push the envelope of the post-rock/folk genre.
