Artist
Abraham the Poor is Josh Gaines, a singer/songwriter operating out of Albuquerque, NM, since 2007. In December of that year, Gaines began AtP as a purely solo acoustic project and started writing and recording the material that would eventually make up "the pumpkin patch cabin ep," his first release. At the outset of the project, he wanted the music to be associated with something other than his own name, feeling that there is more reverence and grandeur in a title, and being inspired by the life of the original Saint Abraham 'The Poor,' (or sometimes known as 'The Child') he felt it was an appropriate choice. The Pumpkin Patch Cabin EP was recorded over several weeks in Summer 2008 in a friend's home, in a completely empty, wood-floored room. All production was done and instruments played by Josh, in an attempt to create a homey, stripped down acoustic product, a lo-fi piece appropriate for rainy days and evenings by the fire. Josh was still a novice at the recording process at the time. January 18, 2011 marks the release of Abraham the Poor's newest achievement and first full-length record, "After the Flood, Into the Wild." With rocky and twangy tones throughout and a diverse spectrum of songs ranging lyrically from jovial to cynical, ATFITW is a much more full-bodied record, and strongly displays Gaines' growth as a songwriter since the EP. Stylistically, the album seems to give a nod toward the likes of Wilco, Neil Young, Manchester Orchestra, and Ray Lamontagne. Us
