Şükrü Tunar (1907-1962) was a Turkish clarinettist and composer. Tunar was born in Edremit, a small town in the Aegean region of Turkey, the son of a worker. Although no-one else in his family had an interest in music, he attempted to play folk songs on a simple tin flute when he was a small child. At the age of seven he saw a soldier playing the clarinet and decided to learn to play. He became an acknowleged master of the Turkish clarinet, performing and recording both solo and in small ensembles of tambur, darbuka, violin, kanun, and piano. He died of a heart attack while performing. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
