Album
"Vampire Weekend" is the debut studio album by the American rock band Vampire Weekend, released on January 29, 2008, by XL Recordings. The album was produced by band member Rostam Batmanglij, with mixing by Jeff Curtin and Shane Stoneback. It followed a period of growing attention for the band on the internet and presented a style combining indie pop, chamber pop, and influences from African popular music. The album debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and later reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart. It also charted in Australia, peaking at number 37. Several singles were released from the album, including "Mansard Roof", "A-Punk", "Oxford Comma", "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", and "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance". Recording took place in various locations, including a basement, a barn, apartments belonging to band members, and Tree Fort studio in Brooklyn. These differing environments influenced the album’s sound, for example producing notably reverberant drum recordings in some sessions. Musically, the album incorporates elements of styles such as soukous and Congolese rumba alongside Western pop structures, as well as instrumentation including strings and harpsichord. The band informally described this stylistic mixture as “Upper West Side Soweto”. Some songs had been in development for an extended period prior to recording, while others, including "I Stand Corrected" and "M79", were completed closer to the album’s release.
