Tiny Cities is the second studio album by American indie folk project Sun Kil Moon, released on November 1, 2005, through Caldo Verde Records. The album consists entirely of reinterpretations of songs by the alternative rock band Modest Mouse. Departing from the more expansive, electric sound of his debut album Ghosts of the Great Highway, Kozelek delivers a subdued and intimate approach on Tiny Cities, often transforming the original compositions into slow, melancholic ballads. The title Tiny Cities is taken from the Modest Mouse song “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes,” which also appears on the album. The covers reinterpret fan favorite songs such as “Dramamine,” “Ocean Breathes Salty,” and “Neverending Math Equation” emphasizing lyrical content and emotional tone over strict fidelity to the source material. The album was recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, with the same lineup as Ghosts of the Great Highway. While reception was divided—some praised its emotional depth and reinterpretative boldness, others noted the drastic departure from Modest Mouse’s original sound—it has since gained recognition for its distinctive artistic vision. This release marked Kozelek’s first on his own label, Caldo Verde Records, and reinforced his reputation for crafting uniquely personal covers.
