Kazufumi and I met while we were studying at Berklee College of Music and The Boston Conservatory. We gigged a lot together in those days and when our ways parted, we held on to the idea that we would play together again in the future. In the summer of 2008, Kazufumi and his wife, jazz pianist Hideko Kimura, honeymooned in Scandinavia. They decided to drop by my place in Copenhagen for a visit and to play some jazz. During the next week, a whole lot of music was played down in my basement studio. We exchanged musical ideas, played each other’s compositions, and found ourselves in the grip of a mutual fascination with each other’s cultures and jazz styles. After several really inspiring sessions, the idea of a tour in Japan began to take shape and the stage was set for our first Japan tour in October 2008. Shin-Ichiro was the obvious choice of drummer for our trio. His fascination with Scandinavian jazz, and Nordic culture in general, has led him to study Danish and Swedish languages and history.
