“PORTALS” is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez. It was released on March 31st, 2023, through Atlantic Records, after a hiatus that lasted nearly 3 years, since the release of her After School EP, on September 25, 2020. Since the February of 2023, she has been teasing snippets from the tracks included on the album, with mysterious and ethereal-like photos and videos. On February 22th, she revealed the album title and release date on her Instagram, and a day later, revealed its cover. The first single, “DEATH”, was released on March 17th, accompanied by a visualizer. Two days later, the album’s tracklist was revealed on Instagram. The music video was released on March 24th, 1 week after the release of the single. The second single, “VOID”, was released on March 29th, with a audio-only video. On the same day, Melanie talked about PORTALS‘ themes on a Instagram post: All of the songs on this album are based on past life regression therapy books she has been reading for a few years now, particularly the in between phase of death and life. All of them disguised with earthly themes for double/triple meaning, to create a frequency for humans to relate to while still here on earth.
