Album
Me is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Lorely Rodriguez, known professionally as Empress Of, released on September 11, 2015, via XL Recordings and Terrible Records. The album consists of 10 tracks, all written by Rodriguez, and blends electronic and alternative R&B sounds, marking a departure from the hazy, dreamy style of her earlier work. Rodriguez recorded much of the album during a solo writing retreat in Mexico, seeking introspection and creative freedom, and continued work on it over the following two years. The album features four singles released prior to the album: "Water Water," "Kitty Kat," "How Do You Do It," and "Standard." A Spanish version of "Water Water," titled "Agua Agua," was also shared via SoundCloud. Following the album’s release, Rodriguez embarked on the Me & You Tour in late 2015 with Abra in support of the record. Me received critical acclaim for its energetic sound and revelatory lyrical themes, and it appeared on several year-end lists. Commercially, it reached #9 on the US Heatseekers Albums chart and #5 on the US Top Dance Albums chart. A re-release on cassette with bonus tracks, including "Woman Is a Word," "Agua Agua," and exclusive remixes, was made available in mid-2016 during the tour.
