Interregnum is the second release by recording duo Alek Nielsen and Curt Liston. The recording sessions began immediately after the Pepsi EP was recorded in December 2009. It was meant to be a full length concept album but as time went on a bulk of the material, mostly taken from their 2009 live sets, began to appear weak. Only the later material, recorded in the Spring of 2010, was left on the album. Although the tracks are all down-tempo, the music is not always easy listening. The complex atmospheres can be appreciated with time, but are often very abrasive and seem to reject any comprehension. Dissonant chords only resolve themselves to fall back out of key (most markedly in the chord progression of "Contradiction"), strings are tuned well below their comfort zone, giving them a tonal uncertainty, and the vocals are buried under the many layers of instrumentation, unable to fully reach the listener for more than seconds at a time. The atmosphere of the album jumps to extremes of paranoia, with only a short break ("Spoon") into numbness. After the chaotic fit of "Doublelife," the albums heaviest and most excited point, the closing tracks sound tired and drained by the experience. At the end however, with "Horizon" there is a sleepy sense of relief and even hope. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
