It came after a tricky period that I always seem to go through after a major release where I fling new ideas around and see what sticks, and taking note of the Super Roots series of EPs by Japanese noise troupe Boredoms, I decided to chart my musical progress through a series of releases with no boundaries other than that of physical space and sound. I set down some rules to push myself out of my comfort zone and help me to hone my skills as a live musician; I wouldn’t use any sampled instruments. If I wanted strings, I’d have to learn to play the cello or force myself to come up with a suitable musical replacement with the tools I had to hand (as it happens, over the course of recording the six so far, I’ve found suitable replacements AND learned to play the cello so, y’know, success.) I wouldn’t use any studio effects like chorus or reverb. If a track needed to be doubled or tripled up, I’d play it in all over again manually.
