The original CD (MPSCD006) was released in June 2001. Some notes on "CONTRASTS 2" (MPSCD006) - electroacoustic music composed, arranged, performed, recorded, and mixed by Carey Nutman. Track 1. Subcontinental Subtractions (8.39) Is this dance music, or is it just pop? I do not normally work in this genre. This piece was composed as an exercise - a response to my pharmacist friends who say, "why don't you write some proper music?" The title refers to the use of (sampled) African percussion, and to the subtractive method of composing. Using a MIDI sequencer, I composed a large number of tracks, each one eight bars long. Then I copied and pasted each section until I had a long piece of music where all tracks were playing all the time. Then I simply erased, (subtracted), sections of each track to create a pleasing build up and form. Track 2. South Downs Study (7.02) This could be described as systems music. The basic sequence was generated by Seq-303, (Techno Toys), after first specifying pitch set, tempo, dynamics, note durations and panning. The pitch set was actually a series of notes lifted from the score of John Casken's orchestral work "Orion Over Farne". The resulting MIDI file was imported into Notator Logic and cut up into shorter fragments, which were then assigned to several tracks/channels and further edited, mainly by transposing and time stretching or contracting. All the sounds are from a Yamaha MU-10 XG module. Track 3. Oloroso (23.10) I like
