"Break the Cycle" is the third studio album by American rock band Staind, released on May 8, 2001, through Flip Records and Elektra Entertainment. It is the band’s most commercially successful album and marked their breakthrough into mainstream popularity. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, where it remained for three consecutive weeks, and spent additional weeks in the top ten. It also charted internationally, including in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. In 2003, it was certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales exceeding five million copies in the United States. Five singles were released from the album: "It's Been Awhile", "Fade", "Outside", "For You", and "Epiphany". All five songs received significant radio airplay, and music videos were produced for each of them. "It's Been Awhile" was the most successful of these singles in international charts, including in the United Kingdom. Some of the songs were also performed acoustically and appeared on the band’s 2002 release "MTV Unplugged". The album includes the track "Waste", which was dedicated to a teenage fan. Musically, "Break the Cycle" combines elements of alternative metal and nu metal with a more melodic post-grunge style, reflecting a shift toward a softer and more acoustic-oriented sound compared to the band’s earlier work, including "Dysfunction" (1999).
