Amala is the debut studio album by Doja Cat, released on March 30, 2018 through Kemosabe and RCA Records. Initially overlooked by critics and commercially unsuccessful, the album gained traction in August 2018 after her viral novelty track "MOOO!" became an internet meme. This renewed attention turned "Candy" and "Juicy" into sleeper hits, helping the album debut on the Billboard 200 in August 2019 and peak at number 138 in November of that year, coinciding with the release of her second album, Hot Pink. The album was later reissued as a deluxe edition on March 1, 2019, adding "Juicy", "Tia Tamera (feat. Rico Nasty)" and "MOOO!". Despite its eventual recognition, Doja Cat has expressed strong dislike for Amala, calling it rushed, unfinished, and unrepresentative of her artistry. Singles from the album include "Go to Town" (lead single, March 2018), "Candy" (which became a TikTok-driven hit in 2019), and "Tia Tamera" from the deluxe edition. NPR praised the record as a "13-track collection of bubbly, hip-hop-influenced indie pop", highlighting its mix of dancehall, trap, house, and R&B with humor and confidence.
