Across the Threshold is a fusion of electronica/IDM and Japanese folk. It starts heavily Japanesque and gradually transitions to electronica. 1. Inn is a short album opener, a dense soundscape mix illustrating some otherworldly mythological place. Japanese court music can be heard in the distance. 2. Pictures of the Floating World features a faux taiko ensemble and a medley of real, sampled, and recorded string instruments. 3. Kuda-Gitsune continues from Pictures, though with far less density. 4. Omamori is a heavily Japanesque track with several parts and ambient elements tossed in. 5. Amasawa is the first heavily electronic track, heavy IDM drums with metallic percussion, mallet instruments, strings, and an "aah" pad that ultimately paints a rather ambient scene. The sounds of forest footsteps, panting, and birds tweeting in the distance define the setting. 6. Zashiki-Warashi is a stripped down, synth-based track using chorded pads and a simplistic 808-like drum set. It's a percussive but soft melodic IDM track, describing the playful Japanese apparition of the title. 7. Daifuku, using a chorded pad, piano, female "aah" pads and a mix of electronic and taiko drums, is Renzu's tribute to soundtrack composer Kenji Kawai. 8. Nakoruru, named after the Samurai Shodown character, uses 7ths chord E-pianos, Ainu vocal clips, taiko drums and brushed snares to a make sort-of faux Ainu hip hop. 9.
