4 (also known as Foreigner 4) is the fourth studio album by the British-American rock band Foreigner, released in the US on July 2, 1981, by Atlantic Records. The album was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, whose production style significantly shaped its polished and radio-friendly sound. It was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The album marked a stylistic evolution for the band, moving towards a more mainstream, pop-oriented AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) sound while retaining the hard rock edge of their earlier work. 4 is characterized by its powerful guitar riffs, extensive use of synthesizers, layered vocal harmonies, and strong, anthemic choruses. This slick production and focus on melodic hooks made it one of the most successful rock albums of the early 1980s. Upon release, 4 was a massive commercial success, spending ten weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, a record for the band. The album remains Foreigner's best-selling release, having been certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA. It is widely regarded as the peak of the band's commercial success and a defining album of the AOR genre. Five singles were released from the album: - "Urgent" - "Waiting for a Girl Like You" - "Juke Box Hero" - "Break It Up" - "Luanne" User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
