about this album

'1' is the first solo EP from Simon York. This EP takes a big step away from the sound of Luxury Stranger (the band in which Simon is the vocalist/guitarist). Bring me an ocean is an ambient track which utilises minimal instrumentation. Most of the chord work is made up of vocal harmonies recorded at varied speeds which are laid upon an organ drone. Show me the way uses orchestral strings and rhythms similar to those used by Peter Gabriel or Björk. The dream is a much softer track, once again focusing on orchestral strings while Marion is the instrumental piece on the EP - a dream like piece which enables the listener to contemplate while surrounded by reversed piano upon a soft atmospheric synth pad, this track is a nod to the work of Philip Glass or Brian Eno. It's happened to you is the only guitar based track on this EP (guitar being Simon's usual choice of instrument. This track screams of Simon's influence by the work of David Bowie. Dream scheme is another nod to David Bowie and touches slightly on the work of Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. In total, Simon is introducing fans of Luxury Stranger to another side of his interest in music. He doesn't see this work as trying to prove anything - hence his decision to make the tracks FREE to download. Simon is currently working on new material for Luxury Stranger. A new non-album single and third album are planned for release in 2012 as well as more touring. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons
