This marks the first collaboration among Tinashe and R&B singer Jeremih. Tinashe revealed in a podcast that “X” was supposed to be a female collaboration with Ariana Grande; however, it didn’t work out as Grande was taking a break from working on music. She also sent the song to artist Rina Sawayama, but that also fell through as Sawayama was filming for John Wick.
