"Way Behind Me" was released on August 22, 1988 after making its debut in a John Peel session that April. It was co-written by vocalist Tracy Tracy and guitarist Paul Court. "Way Behind Me" was the first single from the band's second album Pure and was later added to remasters of the debut album Lovely. It charted at number 8 on US Modern Rock chart, 36 on the UK Singles chart, 91 on Australian charts and 30 on Irish charts.
