Speaking with Songfacts about this song in a 2010 interview, Nettles explained the song was inspired by soundtracks of iconic 80's movies. She said: "If John Hughes were alive to make a movie now, what song would be on that soundtrack? So we ended up working on 'Tonight' and writing 'Tonight.'"
