"To Live Is to Die" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica from their fourth studio album, "…And Justice for All," released on September 7, 1988. Written as a tribute to the band’s former bassist Cliff Burton, who died in 1986, the song is based on a riff he composed before his death. It is primarily an instrumental piece, featuring a spoken word passage in which James Hetfield recites a poem written by Burton, incorporating lines inspired by the German poet Paul Gerhardt and the American novelist Stephen R. Donaldson.
