This song was originally written by Lee Mavers and recorded by his band, The La’s. It was a success in the UK and made the Top 50 Hit List in the US in 1990 but the band disappeared shortly after. Sixpence None The Richer’s version became a hit after showing up in multiple movies and television shows throughout the ‘90s and 2000’s. Though some have speculated that this song was written about heroin use, that was never officially confirmed by any of The La’s bandmates in interviews about the song.
