The Way It Was is a song by the Killers written by all of the members of the band and Daniel Lanois. It is the third track off their album Battle Born which was produced by Brenden O'Brien. Despite it not being a single, the track was included on their 2013 greatest hits album Direct Hits. The song has been featured in the Killers' live show since its release and is a fan favorite. On The Way It Was, lead singer Brandon Flowers said in a track by track breakdown of Direct Hits that "With 20/20 hindsight
