"The Queen is Dead" is the first track on the Smiths' 1986 album of the same name. Johnny Marr said it was based on a song he wrote as a teen. As an ode to Morrissey's obsession with 60's British cinema, the track opens with a sung version of "Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty" from the 1962 drama The L-Shaped Room.
