The beat was produced by Timbaland, who initially showed it to Jay-Z while he was recording The Black Album. Jay passed on the instrumental in favor of what would become "Dirt Off Your Shoulder." It also features an interpolation of "Pick a Bale of Cotton" by Lead Belly.
