Always seen as a 'homely' composer Grieg [the grandson of a Scottish emigre] felt he composed good but short of great music. Perhaps a little unfair on himself his works have a broad if somewhat underestimated appeal. The Last Spring - written as an an elegaic piece was heard by Tchaikovsky who reportedly said the piece moved him to tears. It did me too!
