Ben Gibbard told viewers of his livestream on April 23, 2020, that this song was originally written to be the end credit song for a documentary about polar bears. He said that after it was written, the producers found it too sad to be included in the documentary. Initially the second verse referencing as “wintry grave” was about a dead polar bear.
