Frontman Colin Meloy picked this as one of The Decemberists' best songs in an interview, saying: “It was a very quick write. It came out fully formed. I remember (Decemberists guitar player) Chris Funk was going through a breakup at the time and playing it for the band in practice. It just seemed to hit the right notes, the sort of sad sentiment of it all. It also name-checks the Hi-Line in Montana, so I have a soft spot for it for that reason.“
