"Surrender My Heart" is about the struggle to open up and be vulnerable in a relationship, but ultimately wanting to do so. In the first verse, Jepsen reveals that she has had a difficult time opening up after experiencing a painful loss. She had to work hard to "toughen up" in therapy, but ultimately realizes that "softening up" is what is needed. In the second verse, Jepsen apologizes for pushing away those who care about her, especially when she needs them the most.
