"Sundown" peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart in the Spring of 1974, as well as the Billboard Hot 100 in the Summer. Cathy Smith, Canadian backup singer, groupie, drug dealer, was the inspiration for the Gordon Lightfoot song "Sundown". Lightfoot confirmed in a documentary and interviews that the song was written about his tumultuous, extramarital relationship with her in the early 1970s. Lightfoot wrote the song one evening while his then-girlfriend Smith was out at a bar with friends.
