The Stay Gold Songfacts explains that the song title is a phrase meaning “keep true to yourself” or “preserve your innocence,” which was originally used in Robert Frost’s 1923 poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay. It pops up in SE Hinton’s novel of youthful alienation The Outsiders, when “stay gold” is uttered by the dying gang member Johnny Cade to Ponyboy Curtis and is also the title of the soundtrack’s main theme, sung by Stevie Wonder.
