The title of “spider hole” is a reference to the so-named hiding place of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein from the US forces and Shiite militiamen. Phrases and imagery from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are a recurring theme on both "Hiding Places" and its predecessor "Known Unknowns", itself named for an infamous discourse given by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld at a 2002 press conference.
