According to Krist Novoselic, Spank Thru is the first ever Nirvana song recorded. It was first recorded for the Fecal Matter demo "Illiteracy Will Prevail" in December 1985. As of 2006 it remains the only unreleased song from the Dale Crover-sessions (January 23, 1988 at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle). Another studio version, rerecorded with Chad Channing on drums, was released in 1988 on a vinyl LP box set of bands on the Sub Pop label.
