"South Pacific" was released on the album "The Dugites" in Australia in August 1980 and as a single in Australia in October 1980. The B side of South Pacific was the song, "Gay Guys". "South Pacific" was written as a response to the testing of nuclear weapons in the South Pacific by the French during the 1960s and 1970s. These weapons tests were of great concern to many Pacific Islanders, Australians and New Zealanders at the time because it was literally "on our doorstep".
