Holden creates a possible double entendre with the symbol of the young deer. One one hand he is literally referring to a fawn doe that he sees while lying in bed on a foggy winter night. On the other hand, the deer stands as a symbol for his significant other–a small, young and fragile person. He asks the deer to “make him feel alive,” in the sense that he is looking for meaning in nature. He is also asking his significant other to make him feel like he has never felt before through the power of their relationship.
