“Social Cues” weighs the anxieties that accompany success as a rockstar – a well-tread theme in rock/music history (e.g. Pink Floyd’s The Wall). The “back room” of the chorus likely refers to the back room of the concert venue. Matt Shultz seems to acknowledge the performative aspects of Cage the Elephant shows – which are renowned for their energy – and the different shades of his identity, composed of both the public persona of the rockstar and the private, interior life that isn’t on display to the world.
