'Smiling shame' is a play on the saying 'crying shame', as in something that is so sad and disappointing happening. Smiling Shame, then, is about instead being happy about something that happened that in the moment still feels like a shame, a chance missed, a loss potential but really you know it's a good thing - a duality of feelings.
