In a webchat James Morrison stated: "I wrote Slave To The Music in a hotel room in America. It's about five in the morning, I was really bored, try to write songs for the next day and I imagined like Michael Jackson, like what he would say to me if I was writing the song with him, and he was like: 'You know. You just get a word with rythm and funky and you know, put some rythm in there and make it snappy.' And I was like okay. And then I kinda came up with the (lyrics). Yeah, kind of relentless vocal."
