Shining Star was released January 21 1975 as the lead single from the album That’s the Way of the World. It was written by Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Larry Dunn and produced by Maurice White and Charles Stepney. The song blends funk, progressive soul and disco and runs approximately 2 minutes 50 seconds. It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Soul Singles charts, becoming the band’s first crossover hit. Shining Star won a Grammy in 1976 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
