This track is by the 1980s San Francisco band Terra Incognita. Terra Incognita's recording of the traditional song Rank Stranger, on Ralph Records' Potatoes compilation album, was praised by the Village Voice as "the album's standout" and is considered an inspiration for the alt-country movement. Terra Incognita lasted from 1981-1990; the lineup for Rank Stranger consisted of Max Klein (lead vocal and guitar; now known as the recording artist Max Carmichael, with 3 releases on Last.
