Commencing the double-album era, 'POSSESSION' is the lead single off Melanie Martinez's fourth studio album, 'HADES'. Unveiling the truth about the hodiernally popular tradwife lifestyle, the singer takes on a role of the tragic housewife in an abusive relationship, where she lacks control, agency and body autonomy. At the end of the track, the singer (in the context of the album, Circle) ends up getting away, however the bruises remain, akin to psychological trauma and physical bruises one might receive after experiencing such relationships.
