The breakout African album of 2018 came from a Malian singer based in Italy, with connections among French and Cuban musos as well as the Africa Express gang brought together by Damon Albarn. Diawara's second solo album located the sweet spot between a faithfullness to Malian tradition - with koras and ngonis - and an embrace of modern global sounds, to create a bright but deep sound well-suited to the singer's soulful charisma.
